A climbing legume with stems which are 3-6 cm long and trifoliate smooth leaves at the surface and hairy underneath. It is tolerant to drought but susceptible to flooding.

Rainfall above 750mm a year but not above 2500 mm A fine seed bed and can grow in most of the soils provided drainage is good. Seeds should be treated with cow pea strain CB 756. Should be grown as a sole crop due its vegetative cover and its pods should be sprayed to prevent aphids and thrips from eating the seeds.
